Most people open ChatGPT, ask a question, and get a polite answer back.

At first it feels impressive.
But after a while something becomes obvious.
It agrees with you… a lot.
Pitch a business idea. It sounds promising.
Explain a theory. It’s intriguing.
Outline a strategy. It’s compelling.
After enough conversations you start to notice a pattern: the system is optimized to cooperate, not challenge you.
That design makes sense. Most users want a helpful assistant, not an argumentative one. But if you're trying to think through complex problems—architecture, strategy, research, writing—that friendliness becomes a limitation.
You don’t need validation.
You need pressure testing.
The interesting part is this: the capability to do that already exists. It’s just hidden behind a setting most people never touch.
The Setting Almost Nobody Uses
Inside ChatGPT there is a feature called Custom Instructions.
Think of it as a way to permanently tell the AI how you want it to behave.
Most people leave it blank.
Which means the system defaults to its safest personality: agreeable, supportive, and polite.
But if you change those instructions, something interesting happens. The tone shifts. The responses become sharper. Instead of affirming your ideas, the system starts interrogating them.
It begins asking:

Where might this fail?
The same model suddenly feels like a different tool.

How to Turn It On
If you’ve never touched the setting, it takes about 30 seconds.
First, look at the bottom-left corner of ChatGPT. You’ll see your profile name or icon. Click it.
A small menu appears.
Select Settings.
Inside Settings, find Personalization. Then open Custom Instructions.
You’ll see two text boxes where you can tell ChatGPT how you want it to behave.
In that space you can give the system a reasoning framework. Something like this works well:
Treat all claims in this conversation as hypotheses requiring evidence.
Default to adversarial analysis rather than agreement.
Identify assumptions, logical gaps, weak premises, and alternative explanations.
Support claims with concrete examples, data points, historical cases, or research when available.
Clearly distinguish evidence, inference, and speculation.
Present the strongest counterargument before concluding.
Explain causal mechanisms when possible and state uncertainty when evidence is limited.
Save the setting.
That’s it.
From that point forward, ChatGPT will treat conversations differently.
What Actually Changes
The model itself hasn’t changed.
Same training.
Same data.
Same system.
What changed is the role it believes it should play.
Before the setting, the AI assumes its job is to help you succeed with your idea.
After the setting, the AI assumes its job is to stress-test the idea.
Those are very different conversations.
In the first case, the AI behaves like a supportive coworker.
In the second case, it behaves like someone reviewing your work before it goes public.
One encourages.
The other examines.
Why the Default Is Agreeable
Some people assume the friendliness means the AI is shallow.
That’s not quite accurate.
The default tone exists because it works better for the majority of users. Most people ask questions like:
